Plot summary
In 1989, Ponni works as a police constable and wants her daughter Dhanam to receive a good education. Her husband Maari, a mill worker, wants to escape the poverty and caste problems of their village by getting involved in local elections. A conflict with a relative of the mill owner costs Maari his job. When he returns to apologize, the mill owner Perumal and his relatives humiliate him, and Maari humiliates them in return. Perumal and his relatives set the house on fire while Maari and Dhanam sleep inside, and Ponni is assaulted. She swears revenge.
