Plot summary
Augie and Isolde Poole use their fifth wedding anniversary to file their paperwork with Rock-a-Bye, the adoption agency. Isolde has not managed to conceive, and Dick and Alice Pepper, the couple next door with three children and a fourth on the way, encourage her to keep attempting. Because Augie is a serious cartoonist and the household runs on Isolde's family money, she wants him to wait for a bigger offer than the gag writing Dick, editor of The Townsman, offers. Weeks later Estelle Novick, an investigator from the agency, arrives in the neighborhood. Taking her for someone from a local charity, Augie has two cocktails and talks freely; then Dick makes a pass at her, she is outraged and tells the men who she is, saying that the agency will have to hear about it.

- Glenn Ford was originally slated to appear opposite Doris Day in the film, but he dropped out of the production because of commitments to two other projects.
- The Tunnel of Love was the first film Gene Kelly directed in which he did not also appear as an actor.

The screenwriter Fields's only major change to the play was an explanation that Augie Poole is not the father of Estelle's child; in the play Estelle seduces Augie to get pregnant as research for her PhD thesis on unwed mothers.- The film closed Gene Kelly's peak years at MGM, being the final one in his contract with the studio.
