Biography

Sheila Gish was an English actress whose career was rooted in the theater but also took in film and television. Born in Lincoln, she trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and received her diploma in 1962. Her first leading West End part came as Bella in Robert and Elizabeth, and stage work stayed central to her career. In 1976 she played four roles in Alan Ayckbourn's Confusions, which brought her a Clarence Derwent Award as best supporting actress; she later took an Olivier Award for Joanne in the Donmar Warehouse revival of Stephen Sondheim's Company. Her stage roles also included Arkadina in The Seagull at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2003. Her films included Hitler: The Last Ten Days (1973), Highlander (1986), Mansfield Park (1999) and Highlander: Endgame (2000), and her television work included The First Churchills (1969).
