Plot summary
Zahrain sits on the Arabian Peninsula under a despotic regime. Sharif leads the revolution against it and sits in prison. An officer of the security service arranges to have him killed while he is moved between prisons. Supporters of Sharif stage a rescue, with Ahmed as the mastermind of the breakout. Two condemned men escape in the confusion, Tahar, a criminal who cares nothing for politics, and Huston, an American oil worker. The group takes an ambulance and drives out into the desert.

- Paramount bought the novel Appointment in Zahrain before it was published and assigned Dudley Nichols to adapt it into a screenplay.
- In October 1960 Paramount chairman Jack Karp announced Richard Matheson was writing the script and Edward Dmytryk would direct, but by May 1961 Yul Brynner was attached to star with Ronald Neame producing and directing and Sal Mineo co-starring.
