Matt Stone

Biography

Matt Stone is an American filmmaker, animator, actor and songwriter who built a career alongside his University of Colorado Boulder classmate Trey Parker. Born in Houston and raised in Littleton, Colorado, Stone earned a double major in mathematics and film in 1993. The pair's student feature, the musical Cannibal! The Musical (1993), grew out of a trailer they shot and later became a cult classic. Their animated satire South Park premiered in 1997 and turned Comedy Central into a cable power; Stone writes, directs and voices many of its characters. The duo took the show to theaters with South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999), which drew critical acclaim and included the Oscar-nominated song Blame Canada. Stone also appeared in BASEketball (1998) and made the marionette satire Team America: World Police (2004). With Robert Lopez he co-created The Book of Mormon on Broadway, earning three Tony Awards and a Grammy. He has won five Primetime Emmy Awards and a Peabody.
