Plot summary
Kate Brady has just finished convent school and moves from her family's rural home in Ireland to Dublin. She works in a grocery shop and shares a room with Baba Brennan, a friend from school. Baba is confident around people, while Kate is shy and romantic. The two go dancing at clubs and out with young men they meet. On a trip to the countryside with a man Baba is dating, they meet Eugene Gaillard, a sophisticated author twice Kate's age. Kate feels drawn to him. When she runs into him a second time, at a bookshop in Dublin, she goes up and speaks to him first, and a friendship forms between them despite the gap in their ages.
