Biography

Leslie Cheung was a Hong Kong actor and performer whose career began with music. After completing his schooling he left for Britain to study at Leeds University, and once he was back in Hong Kong he won second prize in a music contest held by ATV in 1976. Work followed on stage, on television and in films made for teenagers. His fortunes as an actor changed when John Woo gave him the role of Kit in A Better Tomorrow (1986). From then on he appeared in many of the best known Hong Kong pictures of the following ten years, directed by figures such as Chen Kaige, Kar-Wai Wong, Hark Tsui and Woo. He was born in 1956 and died in 2003.
