Plot summary
Yuddy is a playboy in 1960 Hong Kong, and his relationship with Rebecca, the former prostitute who raised him, is tense. She has long refused to tell him who his birth mother is. He seduces Li-zhen, who sells tickets at a sports arena, then moves on to Mimi, a cabaret dancer. Yuddy's friend Zeb is drawn to Mimi, who does not return it. Li-zhen finds a listener in Tide, a policeman on his rounds near Yuddy's apartment; his mother is ailing, and he has set aside his wish to go to sea. Li-zhen talks to him about the love affair that ended, about her cousin's coming marriage and about the home she misses in Macau.
