Plot summary
Sung Tse-ho is finishing a prison term when the police come with an offer: early release if he informs on Lung Sei, the mentor he served, whom they suspect of printing counterfeit money. Ho refuses, out of loyalty. Then he learns that his younger brother Kit, whose wife Jackie is expecting a baby, has been working undercover on the same case, and Ho agrees to help. Lung, framed for murder, turns to Ho, who gets him out of Hong Kong to New York City. There Ho looks for Ken, the twin of his late friend Mark Lee, who once ran with gangs, quit Hong Kong young, and now owns a Chinese restaurant that local mobsters are pressing.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about A Better Tomorrow II (1987)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- John Woo and producer Tsui Hark fought over A Better Tomorrow II, with Tsui wanting more focus on Dean Shek's character; both men edited the film. The feud ended their partnership: Hark directed A Better Tomorrow 3 while Woo went on to make The Killer.
- Woo delivered an initial cut of two hours and forty minutes; the studio reacted with ire and demanded the film be trimmed to under two hours within a week. Woo largely disowned the final version, calling it "uneven" and "unsatisfying", though he remained proud of its final gunfight.
- John Woo agreed to direct the sequel partly to give his friend Dean Shek a big part, hoping to ease the financial troubles Shek was having at the time.
- Filming took place in Hong Kong, New York City and Hoboken, New Jersey, and was the first time John Woo had shot a film in the United States.
- Because Chow Yun-fat's break-out performance in A Better Tomorrow made him popular, he was cast in the sequel in a new role, as the twin brother of Mark, the character killed in the previous film.
