First role
Sid James, a British comedian, thought Armstrong was 21 when he offered her a part in an Australian tour of The Mating Season. She was 15 and had gone to a Melbourne cattle call for J. C. Williamson's.
Early training
In 1981 Armstrong went to the United States. She studied at New York City's HB Studio on an acting scholarship, learning under Herbert Berghof and Uta Hagen, and graduated as a full-time student.
Behind the camera
With John Cusack, Tim Robbins and Helen Hunt, Armstrong helped found The Actors' Gang, an experimental theater company that still tours internationally with adaptations of the classics.
A role that slipped away
In 1986 Armstrong got an offer of a three-picture deal from Universal Studios, but it conflicted with her stage part in Measure for Measure in Washington, and she picked that instead.
First role
Armstrong first appeared on television in the early 1970s, presenting weather on GTV-9 in Melbourne. She took over the position from Delvene Delaney while still a teenage schoolgirl, leading them to believe she was 22.
Behind the camera
Armstrong's first directing work came in 2013, when she staged The Woolgatherer at La Mama Theatre as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. She went on to direct eleven short films.
