Biography

The English actor, writer and satirist John Wells first performed in cabaret while at Oxford, and he went on to write for That Was The Week That Was, a 1960s satire show that helped launch the careers of David Frost and others. Born in Ashford, Kent, in 1936, he contributed to Private Eye and to Mrs Wilson's Diary, then from 1979 co-wrote the Dear Bill letters with Richard Ingrams and developed them into the West End farce Anyone for Denis?, playing Denis Thatcher. He took the same role in the Bond film For Your Eyes Only (1981). He wrote the screenplay for Princess Caraboo (1994), and his film appearances included cameos in Casino Royale (1967) and Rentadick (1972). He also voiced characters in the children's series Charlie Chalk and helped revise the text of Leonard Bernstein's Candide.
