Plot summary
A rock band called the Barbusters works the clubs of Cleveland, Ohio, and Patti Rasnick and her brother Joe both perform in it. Patti raises her son Benji on her own and is on bad terms with her devout parents, who object to the way she lives. Joe has a job at a manufacturing plant, and the money helps Patti and Benji. Needing a mixing board, Patti breaks into a house and carries off tools. Smittie, a man at the plant, tells Joe that a relative's house was robbed, and Joe promises to pay the six hundred dollars with money from his mother, who is uneasy about him covering for his sister. After repaying Smittie, Joe learns he has been laid off, and he and Patti decide to take the Barbusters on tour, with Benji.
