Biography
Ja'Net DuBois was an American actress and singer whose career began on the stage in the early 1960s. Born in Philadelphia and raised in Amityville, New York, she made her Broadway debut in The Long Dream in 1960 and went on to appear in A Raisin in the Sun, The Blacks, Nobody Loves an Albatross and the musical Golden Boy. On television she played Loretta Allen on Love of Life from 1970 to 1972, then Willona Woods on the CBS sitcom Good Times from 1974 to 1979. She also cowrote and sang Movin' On Up for The Jeffersons. Her first film was Diary of a Mad Housewife (1970), and she later appeared in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003) and I'm Gonna Git You Sucka (1988). She recorded the album Again, Ja'Net DuBois in 1983, won a CableACE award in 1995 for Other Women's Children and Emmys in 1999 and 2001 for voice work on The PJs.

DuBois cowrote and sang "Movin' On Up," the theme song for The Jeffersons, a show that aired from 1975 until 1985.
Big break
Norman Lear, a television producer, saw DuBois perform on stage at the Mark Taper Forum during a play and was impressed. He then gave her the role of Wilona Woods in his CBS sitcom Good Times.
First role
DuBois relocated to Brooklyn at the start of the 1960s and began acting onstage. Her Broadway debut came in a small part in The Long Dream, a play that lasted four days in February 1960.
A change of course
In the 1980s, DuBois ran a school for teenagers on Long Island, New York, called the Ja'net DuBois Academy of Theater Arts and Sciences, where performing arts were taught.
Behind the camera
In 1992 DuBois cofounded the Pan African Film & Arts Festival in Los Angeles with Danny Glover and Ayuko Babu.
