Plot summary
Tina Balser is an educated housewife and mother in New York City who feels lost and near a breakdown, though she has achieved the life she was raised to want. Her husband Jonathan, a controlling social-climbing lawyer, treats her like a servant and belittles her appearance, her abilities and the way she raises their two daughters, Sylvie and Liz, who are rude to their mother as their father is. Her duties as a wife, a mother and a housekeeper keep her struggling. Tina starts an affair with George Prager, a successful writer whose manner is coarse and cruel and who treats her with the same brusqueness and contempt she meets at home.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Diary of a Mad Housewife (1970)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Neil Young wrote his song "A Man Needs a Maid" inspired by Snodgress in Diary of a Mad Housewife; it went on his 1972 album Harvest, and soon afterwards the two became romantically involved for several years.
- When NBC premiered the film in 1973, Universal prepared an "Edited for Television" version that cut the nudity and strong language but added scenes not in the theatrical cut, including Tina's sessions with her psychiatrist Dr. Linstrom (Lester Rawlins). Neither Frank nor Eleanor Perry approved it.
