Plot summary
He has been drawn to the circus since childhood. As a boy in Rimini he wakes to a circus being raised outside his house and goes to see it, and the clowns he finds there remind him of the frightening neighbors of his seaside hometown. From that recollection he sets out with a film crew, part real and part invented, traveling through Italy and Paris to ask what became of the jesters of his childhood. The crew gathers interviews with veteran clowns, stages circus routines and screens old footage, and he serves as master of ceremonies, sharing with his audience what the clowns still make him feel.
