Big break
Reilly got his big break in 1960 in the original Broadway production of Bye Bye Birdie. In that musical he played a small onstage part and served as Dick Van Dyke's understudy and replacement for the leading role.
Behind the award
Reilly was the first to play Bud Frump, and that performance brought him a 1962 Tony Award in the featured actor in a musical category.
A change of course
Reilly appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson more than 100 times as a guest. Because he lived close to the Burbank studios where the show was taped, he was often called in at the last minute when a scheduled guest canceled or arrived late.
Behind the camera
Reilly directed Ira Levin's play Break a Leg on Broadway in 1979, but it closed after a single performance. Before it opened, he stepped down, blamed creative differences with Levin, and had his attorney ask that his name come off the program and the Palace Theatre marquee.
