Eugene Cernan

Biography

Eugene Cernan was an American astronaut, naval aviator, and fighter pilot who became the final human to walk on the Moon. Born in Chicago and raised in Illinois, he earned an electrical engineering degree from Purdue University and joined the Navy as a fighter pilot. NASA selected him in October 1963 for its third astronaut group. He flew Gemini 9A in 1966, then served as lunar module pilot on Apollo 10 in May 1969, guiding the module to within 8.5 nautical miles of the lunar surface. As commander of Apollo 17 in December 1972, the last Apollo lunar mission, he made three moonwalks and set the record for the longest time walking on the Moon. After retiring as a Navy captain in 1976, he entered private business and later became an ABC News contributor. He authored the memoir The Last Man on the Moon and appeared in the documentary In the Shadow of the Moon (2007). He died in 2017.

A role that slipped away
Cernan passed up the Apollo 16 lunar module pilot seat, which would have put him on the Moon, because he preferred risking no flight at all for the chance to lead a mission of his own.

Cernan and Schmitt used the Lunar Roving Vehicle to travel over 35 km and gathered a record 110.4 kg of geologic samples, the most collected by any Apollo mission.

During Gemini 9A, Cernan made the second American EVA and the third spacewalk ever. Because he overexerted himself without limb restraints, the Astronaut Maneuvering Unit went untested and the spacewalk ended early.
