Plot summary
Philo Beddoe still earns money in underground bare-knuckle fights and decides to retire when he realizes he has begun to enjoy the pain. He lives with Clyde, an orangutan, on the property of his friend Orville, where Orville's mother also lives. One evening he finds Lynn Halsey-Taylor, his former girlfriend and a country-western singer, performing at his favorite bar; she apologizes and they become a couple again. The Black Widows, the biker gang that holds a grudge against Philo, come back. On the East Coast, Jack Wilson blends martial arts with boxing and sits at the top of the bare-knuckle circuit, and a handler concludes that a fight between Philo and Wilson would be the biggest draw in the sport's history. Philo agrees to it.
