Barbara Ewing
Biography
Barbara Ewing, a New Zealand performer and writer, has worked as an actress, playwright and novelist. Born in Carterton, she earned a degree in English and Māori language from Victoria University of Wellington, then moved to Britain in 1962 to train at RADA, graduating in 1965. Her first television part came in A Choice of Kings in 1966, and her first film was the Amicus horror Torture Garden (1967). She followed it with Hammer's Dracula Has Risen from the Grave (1968) and later appeared in Eye of the Needle (1981). On television she played Agnes Fairchild in the comedy Brass from 1983 to 1990. Her stage credits include a one-woman show from 1989, Alexandra Kollontai, which was acclaimed in London and at festivals in Edinburgh and Sydney. She has written novels, and her book The Petticoat Men earned a 2015 Ngaio Marsh Award shortlisting.

Early training
Ewing trained as an actor at RADA in London after winning a New Zealand Government scholarship, moving to Britain in 1962 because New Zealand had no national acting school at the time.
Beyond film
Ewing's 1989 one-woman stage show, Alexandra Kollontai, was a hit. It dealt with the sole woman in Lenin's cabinet in 1917 and won acclaim in London plus the Edinburgh and Sydney Festivals.
