Plot summary
Hannah, just out of college, lives in Chicago and spends the summer as an intern in a production office. Her boyfriend is Mike, and at work she is drawn to Matt and Paul, two screenwriters who share an office. She moves from one relationship to the next while trying to work out what she wants to do with her life. The dialogue was largely improvised, and the performers lived together in a Chicago apartment while the movie was shot. Its structure was planned so that the opening and the closing sections mirror each other, with the middle of the story growing inward from those two ends.
