Plot summary
A monster is rumored to live in Lucky Duck Lake, and Doug Funnie and Skeeter Valentine set out to find it. The creature trails them home to Skeeter's place, where it chomps a copy of Moby-Dick; the boys christen it Herman Melville. Mr. Dink and Mayor Tippi Dink warn them that Bluffco, the outfit that dumped waste into the lake, would smother the story, and that only a press conference Bill Bluff cannot block will do; until then the monster must stay hidden for his own safety. Doug, who stood up Patti Mayonnaise, tells Guy Graham, who runs the school paper, that he holds proof of the pollution. Roger Klotz pays a crew of nerds, Al and Moo Sleech among them, to build him a robot.
