Tim McCoy

Biography

Tim McCoy was an American actor and military officer known for B-grade Westerns and American Indian lore. Born in Saginaw, Michigan, he became a Wyoming ranch hand and learned local tribal customs and sign language. He supplied Indian extras and advised on The Covered Wagon (1923), then created a stage show that ran in Hollywood, London, and Paris. MGM signed him, and War Paint (1926), his first feature there, set the pattern for his sympathetic portrayals of Indians. He joined Columbia in 1931 and made Two Fisted Law (1932) before co-starring with Buck Jones in the Rough Riders series. He hosted The Tim McCoy Show on television and won a local Emmy. In 1973 the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum named him to its Hall of Great Western Performers, and the Cowboy Hall of Fame honored him in 1974. He also received a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. He died in 1978.
