Plot summary
In the 19th century Pyrenees, the Crouteux Inn is kept by Pierre and Rose Martin. Their deaf-mute adopted son, Violet, is the one they send to rob and murder the guests who stop there. One evening a group of travelers takes refuge at the inn after trouble with their stagecoach, among them Father Carnus, on his way to a local monastery with a novice. Pierre wants to kill the travelers and keep what they carry, but Rose is deeply religious and refuses to let the priest be killed.
