- The camp registration scenes in Jugend ohne Gott were shot at the visitor centre of the UNESCO World Heritage site Grube Messel, chosen by director Alain Gsponer for its grey concrete walls, which he called open yet brutal. The building was then digitally edited so that a fence enclosing the camp appears on either side.
- Director Alain Gsponer moved the adaptation of Ödön von Horváth's novel into the near future only after long research, asking a school class that had to read the book in lessons which aspects of the story they responded to, so that the film could get direct feedback from teenagers.
