Plot summary

Connie, a Las Vegas showgirl, owns a Basset Hound called Rover. One night he drops a bone into a meeting between Rocky, Connie's boyfriend, and two gangsters, and the men run off convinced that Rocky is an undercover cop. When Connie leaves on a two-week tour, she puts Rover in Rocky's care. Rocky puts the dog in a bag and dumps him off Hoover Dam. Two fishermen haul the bag out and set Rover in their pickup truck. Rover comes to, jumps clear when the truck stops and walks until he reaches the countryside. Farmer Cal and his son Danny agree to keep him, so long as he causes no trouble, which would send him to a shelter. Daisy, the collie next door, and the other farm dogs help him settle in.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

Rover Dangerfield was conceived in the late 1980s by Rodney Dangerfield and planned for a December 1988 release, but was first planned as an R-rated animated film in the vein of Ralph Bakshi's work until Warner Bros. wanted the content toned down to a G-rating.
Animator Steve Moore was set to direct, developing the script by Harold Ramis with Rebecca Rees, but Rodney Dangerfield fired him for wanting no further revisions; Moore stayed on as a sequence director and Ramis left soon after his demotion.
The Looney Tunes short (Blooper) Bunny was made to run in theaters before Rover Dangerfield, but Warners shelved it because it considered the cartoon's satirical content irreverent, some of it aimed at the studio itself.
