Plot summary
Rosetta is about eighteen and lives in the Grand Canyon, a trailer park, with her mother, who drinks and mends worn clothes for her to sell to charity shops. Mother and daughter come to blows over the gifts the older woman accepts from men. When Rosetta's probationary factory job ends without a hire, she struggles against the manager and the policemen who come to remove her. Denied unemployment pay and unwilling to accept welfare, she asks around for vacancies, sets fish traps in the river to poach trout, and comes upon a waffle stand, where she meets Riquet and asks the owner to hire her, but he says no.
