Plot summary
In 1963 Pittsburgh, Rocky Holzcek, a cantankerous Polish-American baker of 77, insists on adopting his young grandson Michael after the boy's parents die, though the rest of the family says he is too old. The two share Rocky's apartment, where Rocky takes so long arranging his hand at cards that Michael is driven to distraction. Michael grows up, and Rocky lives alone. Rocky refuses to be moved into a retirement home, so Michael, now training as a doctor in Columbus, takes him in. Rocky sits in on a college history class, plays cards with his Chinese roommates, and shows no enthusiasm for Michael's girlfriend, Beth.
