Plot summary
In 1998 Jeffrey Manchester lives in North Carolina, divorced, out of the U.S. Army, with little money and three young children who depend on him. Steve, who served with him in the 82nd Airborne Division, reminds him how well he notices other people's routines. Jeffrey turns that knack on a McDonald's, entering over the roof at night. He surprises the morning shift, orders the staff into the walk-in freezer, hands the manager his own coat to wear, and leaves with what is in the safe. He repeats the approach more than 40 times over two years. Sergeant Katherine Scheimreif leads the hunt for the robber the media has named Roofman.
