Plot summary
Destiny dances at Moves, a New York strip club, to help support the grandmother who raised her, and her tips barely cover what she owes the house. One night she follows Ramona Vega, a veteran dancer, up to the roof and asks for a light; Ramona offers to teach her the work and which men pay what. With Diamond's help she learns the moves, and the money starts coming in. Then the 2008 recession hits Wall Street, and the clients the club depends on stop spending. Destiny leaves the club when she has a baby, and when she returns years later it is a different place. Ramona has a scheme: find men at bars, bring them to the club, and run up their credit cards. Destiny joins on the condition that no one gets hurt.

- Producers first had Martin Scorsese in mind to direct and also considered Adam McKay. After Scorsese and other directors passed, Scafaria, who had refused to take on other directorial projects in hopes of directing Hustlers, won the job with a two-minute sizzle reel she created to demonstrate her concept.
- Producer Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, pitching Hustlers to studios after Annapurna dropped it, said the male studio executives "were a little uncomfortable": "Everybody could see the commercial value of this movie, but they were like, 'Can they just drug the bad guys?'"
- Lopez, who plays a veteran stripper in the film, began pole dance training with professional dancer and choreographer Johanna Sapakie two and a half months before filming, in preparation for a scene in which she performs a major solo pole dance routine without a professional stand-in.
- Scafaria had the idea to cast Cardi B, a former stripper, and Lopez convinced her to join the project: "I know she knew this world better than any of us. I told her she had to do it. And I wasn't going to take no for an answer."
- The film was banned outright from release in Malaysia and has received censorship in several Asian countries, after the Malaysian Film Censorship Board denied it a clearance certificate for showing what officials called "excessive obscene content".
