Plot summary
Lenny Freeman is a middle-aged accountant in Peoria whose ambition is to become a stand-up comedian. After his mother dies, leaving him her 1953 Oldsmobile, he quits the job and drives toward Las Vegas, where he means to audition for a competition run by the Vegas showman Monte Guy. Lenny's own taste runs to vaudeville and the comedy of the early 1900s, and the blunt humor of the people he meets on the road confuses him. He picks up a hitchhiker called Hitch, who hears about the audition, offers career advice and becomes Lenny's manager. At Hitch's urging, Lenny takes a slot at a local club's open mic night.
