Plot summary
Romulus Gaita left Yugoslavia for Australia after World War II and, in the early 1960s, farms at Frogmore, a town in Victoria, where he raises his son, Raimond, in a shack in the bush. Raimond's mother, Christina, is German and lives in Melbourne, estranged from Romulus. For Rai, poverty, bruises and the puzzling behavior of the adults around him compete with his wish for a settled home and with his own growing up. Romulus is near despair when Christina takes up with his best friend's brother, who proposes a remedy: Romulus should send back to the old country for a new wife.
