Plot summary
Roman J. Israel works at a two-partner law firm in Los Angeles for $500 a week, drafting briefs that often turn on his clients' civil rights. For years he has worked on a legal brief aimed at reforming plea bargaining. His partner, William Jackson, makes the court appearances Roman finds difficult, and when Jackson suffers a fatal heart attack, the debt-laden firm is set to close. George Pierce, who studied under Jackson, handles the wind-down and offers Roman a job at his own large practice, which Roman declines because he takes Pierce for a greedy lawyer. A job interview with Maya at an activist network goes poorly, but she invites him to speak at a meeting about a protest. With no other offers, Roman accepts Pierce's.
