Plot summary
Cozy is a housewife in her thirties living in Dade County with her husband and her father, Jimmy, who works as a crime scene investigator and once played jazz drums. She feels distant from her children. Jimmy loses his gun, and his boss suspends him. In neighboring Broward County, Lee Ray Harold, a deadbeat who shares a house with his elderly grandmother, comes across the weapon; when he threatens her with it, she throws him out of the house. Lee drives around firing the gun and almost hits Cozy on her way to a bar. She confronts him there, and he buys her a drink, then talks her into breaking into a friend's house to swim in its pool. While Lee shows Cozy how to handle the gun, the owner comes outside to investigate.

- Inspired by Terrence Malick's Badlands, Reichardt said she and Hartman wanted to understand how the lone-rebel figure common to road movies could exist in the '90s, when even the Burger King slogan urges breaking the rules.
- Reichardt grew up in the part of Florida shown in the film. She described it as a road movie missing the road, a love story missing the love, and a crime story missing the crime.
