Plot summary
Oksana left her son Roman behind in a Ukrainian village two years ago and went to Germany, where she looks after an elderly couple in their home. When the grandmother caring for the boy dies, nine-year-old Roman travels after his mother and gets across the border into Europe. He finds Oksana living with Gert Schwarz, the widower of the woman she nursed, and moves into the old man's apartment. Gert does not speak the boy's language and tries to befriend him.
