Plot summary
Rita and Sue are teenagers who are still at school, growing up with their families on a run-down estate in Bradford. Both of them babysit for Bob and Michelle, a couple who live with their children in a better-off part of town. While Bob is driving the girls home from the job one night, he stops on the Yorkshire moors and complains that his wife has no interest in sex any more. He proposes that the three of them have sex together. Rita and Sue are happy to agree, and the arrangement becomes a regular occurrence on the nights when Bob drives them back.

- Screenwriter Andrea Dunbar disliked Alan Clarke's film adaptation of her play because it changed her original ending to be more upbeat, criticizing the change and saying: "You'd never go back with somebody who had betrayed you".
- Playwright and screenwriter Andrea Dunbar based the story partly on her own life and on two raucous girls she overheard in the ladies' toilet at Keighley Market.
- Scenes of Rita's house, Sue's flat, the girls' school and The Beacon pub on Reevy Road West, seen in the film's first scene, were shot at Buttershaw in West Yorkshire; all of these buildings have since been demolished.
- The film's success revived Andrea Dunbar's plays, and it has amassed a cult following for its unblinking look at the working class in northern England and for its 1980s style and fashions.
