Plot summary
San Pablo, New Mexico, is in the middle of its fiesta when Gagin, an army veteran, arrives with a plan to blackmail the mobster Frank Hugo, whom he blames for his friend Shorty's death. A check that incriminates Hugo goes into a locker, and its key is hidden behind a framed map at the bus depot. With the fiesta on, the nearby hotel has no room for him, so he crosses to the non-tourist side of town, where Pila brings him to the La Fonda Hotel and hands over a charm that, she says, guards him. In Hugo's room he leaves Jonathan, Hugo's private secretary, unconscious, and Marjorie Lundeen, Hugo's acquaintance, questions him. FBI agent Bill Retz urges him to abandon the scheme.
