Plot summary
Frank and April Wheeler live with their two children in a Connecticut suburb, where neighbors take them for the perfect couple. Frank commutes to an office job in New York City that he hates and puts little effort into. April, who wanted to act, keeps the house. Seven years into their marriage, Frank still has not settled on any work he cares about. April proposes a move to Paris, a city Frank visited during the war and loved, and which she has never seen. She would support them with a secretarial job at an international organization, leaving Frank free to look for a passion of his own. He hesitates, then agrees, and the two begin telling friends and acquaintances about the plan.

- The film rights ended up with actor Patrick O'Neal, who spent the rest of his life trying to finish a workable screenplay. Yates read O'Neal's treatment of his novel and found it "godawful", but O'Neal refused his repeated offers to buy the rights back; Yates died in 1992, O'Neal two years later.
- Winslet sent the script to her friend Leonardo DiCaprio and persuaded him to take the part of Frank. DiCaprio was intrigued by the 1950s era and by the complexities of marriage.
- The homeowners let DreamWorks dismantle and remodel both the interior and the exterior of a real house for the film, a transformation that involved approximately 45 tradespeople, among them carpenters, interior designers and landscapers.
