Plot summary
In her early twenties, Samantha Hartley comes to Rajapur, India, to visit the resort where her mother Sara once stayed. Tracing her mother's steps, Samantha learns the account of Sara's stormy marriage to Jeremy, an alcoholic who could be charming and moody. Days after the wedding, Sara questions whether she made a mistake in marrying Jeremy, and the honeymoon takes the couple to India. There Sara becomes acquainted with Jai Singh, a handsome and sensitive widower who lives in Rajapur and speaks fluent English. The friendship between the two grows into a romance, and both know the love is transgressive.
