Plot summary
Kate, a journalist, and Martin, an architect, have been struggling since a miscarriage, so they return to Blackholme Island off the west coast of Scotland, where they once spent a happier holiday. Fairweather Cottage is the island's only dwelling, reachable by ferry from the mainland. Their generator fails, injuring Martin's arm and cutting the power, and the CB radio, their only link to the mainland, starts to fail as well. After a storm, a man in combat fatigues washes up on the shore. He gives his name as Jack Corman, a British soldier, and says an airborne disease called Argromoto Flu is sweeping the world, killing everyone it infects. He tells them the only way to survive is to seal themselves inside the cottage.
