Plot summary
There are four places on Red Rover, a Mars mission that never returns, and Damon Pierce, a thirty-three-year-old geologist in Toronto, has decided to apply for one of them. The mission's centerpiece is a reality television show run by the network that sponsors it. Damon, who believes he has nothing left to live for, wants to start his life over. His scientific approach clashes with his boss, Brad. Beatrice, whom he has known for twenty years, ended the relationship a year ago; she and her yogi boyfriend Mark have pushed Damon into the basement suite and want to buy him out. His one real passion is taking his metal detector to the beach, where he meets Phoebe, a musician handing out flyers for the mission. She offers to help him apply.
