Plot summary
Mitch Brockden, an assistant district attorney in Chicago, wins a case, drinks with colleagues, then drives himself home instead of taking the cab he promised his wife Rachel. A man runs into the road in front of his SUV and Mitch cannot stop in time. The stranger is covered in cuts and begs Mitch not to leave, but Mitch calls 911 from a pay phone without giving his name, then washes the vehicle and throws his clothes in the trash. The next day he learns the man was a parolee, found dead in a van. Detective Blake Kanon tells him the man's blood was found on tools and plastic sheeting in the van of Clinton Davis, a car mechanic, and Mitch asks to be assigned the case.
