Plot summary
Twenty-four scientists, among them the highly intelligent but irritable Professor Konstantin Carus, begin the night shift of 13 January 2011 in the control room of a particle accelerator. Eight hours later, at six in the morning on 14 January, only Carus comes out; the other twenty-three have disappeared without a trace. The sole survivor is held at a secret location, where Robin Spector and Sophia Dekkers of the Swiss Department of Public Prosecution question him. They want to know what the experiment did, whether the run created a temporary black hole that absorbed the surrounding matter, and whether the accelerator endangers the world.
