Plot summary

Alma, a researcher at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, is among ten experts asked to test a humanoid robot. At a dance club, she meets Tom, who answers her questions about mathematics and a favorite poem before repeating himself and being carried away. The employee running the trial apologizes and says the three-week project can begin the next day. Alma complains to Roger, her department head, and says she is ready to write her evaluation, but he holds her to the assessment: an ethics committee he sits on will decide whether such machines receive some human rights, and her report matters to it. He offers funds for her team to examine cuneiform tablets in Chicago. Alma brings Tom into her home, where she keeps her distance from his attempts at romance.
