Plot summary

After Earth became uninhabitable, the people who could not afford passage to the planet Rhea stayed on overcrowded stations in orbit. Laura Portmann, a doctor, takes a job on the cargo ship Kassandra, an eight-year voyage to Station 42, to pay for her own journey to Rhea and her sister Arianne. Messages between the sisters take three years to arrive. Her crewmates are Captain Pierre Lacroix, Anna Lindbergh, Miyuki Yoshida, Igor Prokoff and Claudio Vespucci, and the security officer Samuel Decker, a Sky Marshall, is aboard because the Luddites have been bombing stations. Each of them keeps watch for a shift of eight and a half months while the others sleep in cryogenic hibernation. During Laura's shift, strange sounds come from the cargo bay, and she feels she is being observed.
