Plot summary
A shy American poet, Elizabeth Bishop, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, comes to Rio de Janeiro in 1951 to see Mary Morse, a friend she knew in college. Mary's partner is the Brazilian architect Lota de Macedo Soares. Bishop is overwhelmed by Brazilian sensuality and is the opposite of the dashing Lota. Mary is jealous, while the unconventional Lota wants both women at her side. A triangle takes shape among them, against the backdrop of the 1964 military coup. The story, largely set in Petrópolis, follows Bishop and Lota between 1951 and 1967, and their years together are passionate and often tumultuous.
