Plot summary
In 1831, after giving up the throne of Brazil, Dom Pedro I, the country's first emperor, makes the return voyage to Europe on the English ship Warspite under adverse conditions. The trip gives him the distance to face his own life rather than the affairs of state, and to conquer his fears. He weighs the mistakes and successes of his rule, and in memory he goes back over the outstanding moments of his earlier years, from his arrival in Brazil from Portugal with his family in 1808, when he was ten, to his departure from the country by night in 1831.
