Plot summary
At the end of 1999, army colonel Fernando Cruz kills himself and leaves part of his inheritance to Juliana, a daughter he never recognized, born to a former housemaid. She never knew her father and shares a modest home with her grandmother, who is seriously ill. The legacy stirs old wounds and conflicting feelings, and Juliana weighs accepting it to help her grandmother, against her own convictions and those of her boyfriend Diogo, a left-wing student activist. In the house where her mother once worked, she meets the lawyer handling the estate and finds photographs and books praising the dictatorship, and she takes a volume titled Memoirs of a Guerrilla Soldier. Reading it, she learns of João, a student who in 1968 went underground and joined a guerrilla in northern Brazil with his girlfriend Marta.
