Plot summary
Nise da Silveira is a psychiatrist who returns to work at a psychiatric hospital on the edge of Rio de Janeiro in 1944, after being released from prison. The doctors there treat schizophrenia with electroshock and lobotomy, and she refuses to use either. Ridiculed and kept apart from her colleagues, she is given the abandoned occupational therapy sector to reorganize. The people in her care are poor, have been hospitalized for years, and their families have left them. She insists they be called clients, not patients, and encourages them to express themselves through art.
