Plot summary

Masato works as a ramen chef in Takasaki, Japan. His father, emotionally distant, dies suddenly, leaving him to sort through what remained: a suitcase of keepsakes and a red notebook filled with his Singaporean mother's jottings and old photographs. She died when he was ten. He carries the notebook to Singapore, the country his mother came from, hoping to learn who his parents were. In that city he meets Miki, a food blogger from Japan raising a child on her own, and she helps him search out his mother's relatives, among them Ah Wee, his mother's brother, who keeps a bak kut teh stall.
