Plot summary
Milton spends the summer of 1943 in Piedmont in love with Fulvia, who values the depth of his thinking and the letters he writes her. A year later he has joined the Resistance and fights alongside other partisans in the Langhe during the liberation war. During a conversation he discovers that Fulvia had secretly loved Giorgio, his best friend and a fellow partisan. Milton decides to go and find Giorgio in the Langhe. Giorgio, though, has just been taken prisoner by the Fascists. Milton is caught between the fighting against the Nazi-fascists, his friendship with the men of his brigade, and his secret love for Fulvia.
